How to Update Kodi on Firestick and Fire TV

Getting Kodi on your Firestick or Fire TV is one of the best things you can do. But like with everything else, sometimes Kodi gets updated, and depending on the situation, the update process can be a bit more complicated than just pressing a button that does that automatically for you. If you don’t know how to do this, don’t worry, here you will learn how to update Kodi on Fire TV and Firestick.

The latest stable version is Kodi 19 matrix, and that’s the one that you will most probably update too. With every new version, you get performance improvements so it’s very important you keep your apps up to date. Updating Kodi will also depend on the way you installed it, but for that, we will talk more later.

What to do before you update?

Before updating there are a few things you need to consider. First of all, and the most important one is to check if the addons that you have are compatible with Kodi 19. Since this version is new, some of the addons may not have updated yet, which means that once you update to Kodi 19 you will not have them anymore.

Another thing that you need to do before you update is making sure that the Unkown sources inside the Firestick settings are on.

  • In order to do that, go into the Settings of your device.
  • Click on My Firestick or My Fire TV, depending on the kind of device you have.
  • Find and open the “Developer options.”
  • There you will see two options, “ADB debugging” and “Apps from Unkown Sources,” since you need to enable the second option, make sure it’s ON.

Depending on when you first installed Kodi, you might already be in the newest version, which means you will need to check for that before you proceed. If you already are on Kodi 19, it means you don’t need to worry about any updates for now.

  • To do that go into the home screen of your Firestick / Fire TV / Fire TV Cube / Firestick 4K.
  • Open the Settings.
  • Click on the Applications tab.
  • Now find and press on the “Manage Installed Applications.”
  • There you will see the full list of every app that is installed on your Firestick / Fire TV Home.
  • Find and hover over Kodi. On the right side, you will see some information about the app, and on top is the version, there you will see the current version of Kodi. As long as it’s a previous version of Kodi you are good to proceed with the update.

Now that you know what to do before you update, make sure to follow the steps of the methods below carefully. As soon as you are finished you will be back to enjoying the content that you can find through Kodi.

How to Update Kodi Method #1

For the first method, we will be using an app called Downloader App. This app is very useful and it’s a part of so many guides regarding firestick, and other devices since you can also find this app on the Google Play Store, and other places.

Step #1

Now the first step depends on whether or not you have the Downloader App installed on your firestick or not. If you do, proceed with opening it by clicking on its icon on the home screen, if not head over to the Amazon App Store and search for the app, and install it on your device.

Step #2

If you just downloaded the app, you will have to do some other things before you can get work with the app. After the Downloader App is installed, open it. You will need to give it access to photos, media, and files on your device, and then press Ok on the Update Notes. Now the app is ready for you to use to update Kodi.

Step #3

Grab your remote and press the OK button on it. By doing so you will open the keyboard in which you will need to type the following URL https://kodi.tv/download and then press the Go button. That will start the downloading process.

Step #4

Once the download is done you need to press Install, this will start the updating process to the new Kodi 19. Wait until the process is over and click “Done.”

Step #5

Now it’s up to you if you want to delete the installation file or the update file that you downloaded in order to update to Kodi 19. It’s recommended that you do so, in order to clear some space in case you will need that space in the future. If you want to remove the file, you need to press the Delete button on both pop-ups that will show.

Step #6

Now the Kodi 19 version is installed on your device, and you can access it and open it by going to the Home screen of your device. If you want to check what version the one you installed you can do so by following the instructions above on the “What to do before you update?” section.

How to Update Kodi Method #2

As we mentioned at the beginning of the article depending on what method you first used to install Kodi on the first time is also relevant to how you can install it. For example, if you installed it through an app called AppStarter the whole process is much more different than the first method where we used the Downloader App.

If you used that app, it’s possible you still have it installed. This will be great since you don’t have to redownload it. Let’s start with this guide and see how you can update it through this alternate method.

Step #1

The first step is to open the AppStarter app. You should probably have this installed from the first time you installed Kodi, still, if you don’t you can install it without a problem. As to how you can do that you can use the same method as the first one on this article but instead of the Kodi link you can type this https://github.com/sphinx02/AppStarter

Step #2

Once you open the app, you will see on the left side a Menu, there you will see four options, Apps, System, Updates, and Settings. Go into Updates.

Step #3

Once you are in the “Updates” section, you will see three apps show up, AppStarter, Kodi, and SPMC. On the right side of the Kodi app you will see two options, “Check for Update” and “Install.”

Step #4

Click on the “Check for Update,” wait for the app to respond and if it recognizes a new version, it will begin updating the app.

Step #5

Wait until the update is finished and press Done once it is. Now you have the latest Kodi 19 version. Enjoy!

Closing thoughts

As we saw there are a few different methods on how we can do this process. Depending on the method that you used to first install the app, you can proceed with the method that suits more what you need to do. This article will be useful for you some more times in the future depending on how frequently Kodi gets updated.

Once you are finished with the updating process you will go back to enjoying the movies and other contents that you’re were enjoying previously in this app.
